UFC John Dodson Visits Manila, Philippines MMA LIFE SHOP

It is now possible for beginners to learn the various martial arts styles through martial arts video training. Mixed martial arts training videos will teach you the various arranged and systemized combat methods available today. While some of these styles are traditional and quite historical, others are more contemporary.

All these styles have a unique way of teaching you how to fight, although some principles tend to overlap significantly amongst styles. Martial art training videos provide instructions to learn the various techniques in fighting including: grappling or ground fighting; striking or stand up tactics; throws and takedown techniques; weapons based techniques; low impact or meditative techniques and the hybrid/ sports style of MMA.

The striking or stand up techniques will teach you how to defend yourself while on your feet through the employment of kicks, blocks, knees, punches and elbows. The degree to which you may learn these techniques will depend on the specific style, sub-style and your instructor. Moreover, most stand up styles also teach other aspects of combat. Kickboxing, Boxing, Krav Maga, Karate, Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do are some common styles employing striking or stand up techniques.

Grappling or ground fighting techniques are commonly found in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Shoot fighting, Wrestling and Russian Sambo. This technique teaches you how to take down your opponent to the ground, achieve a dominant position or employ a submission hold until the fight ends.

The throwing or takedown styles will enable you to takedown or throw your opponent to the ground such as in Aikido, Hapkido, Shuai Jiao and Judo. This is because in most styles, you will find that combat always begin with both competitors in a standing position. All grappling styles generally teach takedowns, while most throwing styles will teach you grappling. This is proof of the significant amount of overlapping amongst various styles. Nevertheless, this technique places emphasis more on the takedowns.

The weapon based techniques employ weapons such as a wooden sword in Goju-Ryu Karate. Other weapon based styles include Iaido, Kali and Kendo. Tai Chi is a widely recognised form of low impact or meditative style which places emphasis more on fitness, breathing techniques and the spiritual aspect of combat. Other low impact styles include Baguazhang and the Chi Gong based styles. MMA is a hybrid mixed martial arts style of sports which trains you to compete using techniques such as grappling, takedowns, throws, stand up fighting and submissions.

In a life infested with savage criminals, nobody is safe as anything can happen to anyone anywhere. Thus many people in one way or another indulge in different kinds of martial arts discipline during their lifetime. Kenpo Karate is one such form of martial arts that is commonly and widely practiced by different people all over the world. Kenpo is practical, more focused and has a less ostentatious style. It adapts real life situations in its lessons and students are made to undergo a tough training with lots of challenging fights.

Kenpo Karate was once known as "Ed Parker system" in the USA, due to the fact that, many Kenpo instructors were originally trained by the mentioned famous martial artist. This, however, should not be misconstrued to mean that Kenpo Karate was founded by Parker. Kenpo was actually introduced by Prof. William K. S. Chow, who was Parker's own Instructor, in 1949. It may sometimes be called "Kempo" and the techniques involved in it are almost identical from Mistsoe's Kenpo Jui-Jitsu. It is described by fast moves in a repeated pattern in overpowering ones assailant or aggressor. Unlike the other sport styled forms of martial arts, this adaptation by Ed Parker is geared towards self defense and is more of a war art.

The techniques involved in Kenpo Karate are very specific to various belt levels such as:

-Yellow: grasp of death, delayed sword, sword and hammer, checking the storm and captured twigs

-Orange: five Swords, crashing wings, glancing salute, locking horns, repeating mace, shielding hammer, and clutching feathers.

-Purple: crushing hammer, snapping twig, calming the storm, twisted twig, raining claw and reversing mace.

-Blue: shield and sword, parting wings, darting mace, thundering hammers, cross of destruction, sleeper, flight to freedom, hooking wings, and circling wing.

-Green: flashing wings, destructive twins, begging hands, shield and mace, snaking talon, entangled wing and retreating pendulum.

-Brown Belt (3rd, 2nd& 1st Class): glancing spear, gathering clouds, dominating circles, menacing twirl, broken gift, clipping the storm, fatal cross, and courting the tiger.

There is also the black belt that is an epitome of all other techniques, and entails continued perfection coupled with the big task of teaching or patronage. It has a degree system ranging from the 1st degree to the 10th degree-a reserve for the grandmasters.

The few basics to self-defense mechanism taught include:

-Listening and paying attention

-Keeping your eyes open

-Feeling or sensing

-Self awareness

-Awareness of your surroundings and people

-Staying together with the crowd

-Keeping a distinct barrier from your attacker

-Attracting attention in during attacks

-Controlling the hands and middle body parts of the assailant.

-Going for the kill by applying the strongest force to your target's weakest point.

The other types of martial art like Kung Fu involve the use of techniques that can not be easily carried out especially in street attacks. Kenpo, on the other hand, is more simple and effective since involves brutal sparring or striking instead of raw physical strength and can be performed by a person of any experience or body type. Just like all other forms of martial arts, Kenpo Karate requires loyalty, discipline and determination.

MMA Female MMA World Champion Angela Lee Is Smashing Through Sport’s Glass Ceiling | MMA Insider - Yahoo Sports Singapore MMA LIFE SHOP

This phenomenon occurs in many martial arts classes, mostly in the western world. Think about the standard structure of a class. There is usually some introductory activity at the beginning to prepare the body for vigorous exercise: the warm up. Most instructors, in this part of the class, will get their students to do things like shuttle-runs, press-ups, sit-ups and so on, lot's of pure fitness activities, but no combative movements.

In fact, many instructors will consider these purely fitness activities to be essential to training and completely unavoidable. The reasoning being that in order to do martial arts, one must be physically fit, therefore fitness exercises are essential. This is not true.

It is completely possible to incorporate vigorous physical work into martial arts inspired drills, such as complex or challenging kicking routines. Often, such activities are more intense than the simpler, general sports ones. It just requires imagination in teaching.

All you have to do to increase the workload of combat movements is increase the physical strength, endurance or speed needed to perform them. This could involve designing lengthy or awkward combinations of movements to push to students to their limit. You can even derive warm-up routines from prepared sparring routines.

Now there's nothing intrinsically wrong with doing purely fitness exercises, however it's important to remember that your students are there because they want to learn martial arts. This does not necessarily mean that they want to do general fitness.

Nowadays sports lessons in schools are infamously off-putting, and physical activities outside of the education system are important in an increasingly sedentary society. Therefore the less you do to remind your students of general sports, the better it is for your student retention statistics.

There's also an element of purpose to martial arts specific exercises. Some people, when they do general fitness exercises, will gain no sense of purpose from it. They are doing fitness for the sake of being fit, which they don't see the point in, particularly as simply being fit requires never-ending regular effort. If you want an example of this, think why so many people join gyms and then give up shortly afterwards. They get bored with no sense of purpose to the activity. If fitness is merely a by-product of combat training, students get two things out of it: the fitness, but more importantly, the ability to do the moves. Martial arts specific exercises will generally reward students with increased flexibility and control as well as fitness.

Fitness is best left as a convenient side-effect of martial arts. If fitness is specifically taught, it seems like a requirement and is then tedious and eats away at motivation.

It's also somewhat of a waste of valuable time. Some instructors run their classes on the principle that in every lesson they should have a decent proportion dedicated to fitness. Given that most classes are one hour long once or twice a week, and considering fitness can be gained without specifically training in it, you're compromising the quality of the martial arts unnecessarily.

Chuck Liddell has an exclusive interview on his website at MMAJacked. You have to have register for a free account in order to access the interview, but he addressed all concerns about his career following his shocking decision loss to Keith Jardine. He did make one thing very clear during the interview Liddell told everyone "Yes I want to come back."

There was a lot of concern about Jardine's leg kicks during the fight, and how hard they may have been. Liddell downplayed the leg kicks by stating, "I'm fine, he didn't kick me enough times... I walked around all day the next day at Disneyland with my kids." He also talked about not taking the fight to the ground as a mistake, and that "I don't feel like I performed badly. I think I made some mistakes."

When asked about his future, Liddell said "I still want to fight anybody they want to put in front of me, whether they want to do it, I don't know." He was referring to a question about Wanderlei Silva when he said that, I'm not sure if it's a little jab at "The Axe Murderer" for a fight that never took place at UFC 76 or if I'm just reading into it a little too much.

Tim's Take: Liddell has a long road aheada of him if he wants his Light Heavyweight title back, I don't think that's his main concern right now from listening to his interview. I think that he wants to get back on the winning track, so don't be surprised if he fights somebody outside of Top 10 rankings before a big showdown with either Mauricio "Shogun" Rua or Wanderlei Silva.

MMA Holly Holm willing to fight Cris Cyborg at 140 pounds - MMA Fighting MMA LIFE SHOP

Today, in my first article, I would like to take a brief look at the modern perspective of martial arts, its new sporty image and its level of practicality in a self defence situation.

During my time in training, I have come across many proponents of the belief that traditional martial arts are no longer suitable for use in self protection, as the techniques require too much training and do not allow for enough personal variation. That may be your opinion, but I feel this view has largely been built around the 'new' image of martial arts.

At this point, I think it is important to remember where these arts originated from - brutal warfare. The majority of martial arts were founded hundreds (if not thousands) of years ago, by warriors who were engaged in deadly conflicts. They had no interest in scoring points, impressing the judges or even building up a devoted fan base, these guys had to develop methods of rapidly eliminating their adversaries. These are the techniques that remain effective today, and so they should. Human anatomy has not changed, nor have the laws of physics!

You will find the majority of martial artists on one side of this imaginary 'line', or the other. Some are sport fighters, training for competitions rather than self defence. The others are more traditional, focusing on the highly effective self defence techniques found in their art. Much as I enjoy tournament fighting, I believe it has gone some way towards destroying the viability of traditional arts in self defence. The advent of padded gloves, padded feet guards, helmets and body armour has entirely changed how a fighter uses his arsenal of techniques. Kicks and punches have been adapted to accommodate the padding, and many traditional techniques almost entirely forgotten.

In a self defence situation there are no second or third places, no umpires, and most rules. What works in competition may well not work in the street (for example a multiple high kick combination), and what is most effective in the street probably goes far beyond the rules of the tournament.

That being said, I do believe that tournament fighting does have some positive aspects- it teaches good timing, distancing, control, flexibility, speed and also promotes general fitness. Once we have a firm understanding that there is a world of difference between what happens inside and outside the ring, then we are on fairly safe ground.

MMA Don't Count on Luck to Prevent an Assault MMA LIFE SHOP

There are stories about women being assaulted, mugged or otherwise victimized that appear on the news every day. Unfortunately, many men perceive women as being the weaker sex and think they are easy targets. It's easy to assume that nothing like this would ever happen to you or a loved one, but counting on luck to prevent an assault is not an effective strategy. Why leave it up to fate, when the Women Assault Survival and Prevention course at the Defensive Tactics Institute can help you take matters into your own hands? The successful completion of this woman self defense course will give you the knowledge and skill that you need to respond effectively to assaults.

Stop Living in Fear

Some women ignore the very real risk of assault and carry on about their daily lives as if something like that could never happen to them. Others are fully aware of the risks and are wracked with anxiety and fear. Both outlooks can be dangerous, and neither one gets results. In both cases, women don't have confidence in their ability to survive and respond effectively to assaults. By enrolling in the WASP course at DTI, women can arm themselves with the skill and knowledge that's necessary to lead happier, safer lives. These self defense courses can make a huge difference for women of all ages.

Be Ready for Anything

Counting on luck is nothing more than a form of powerlessness. When you count on luck to see you through tough or dangerous situations, you are admitting that you are powerless to protect yourself. There is no reason to live life this way. WASP self defense classes at DTI are specifically designed to give women the tools they need to tap into the natural talents that they usually don't know they have. A small amount of physical instruction is provided, but the majority of the course revolves around security awareness and the effects that fear has on your ability to defend yourself.

Exchange Luck for an Actual Plan

By successfully completing the WASP course at DTI, you will be able to kick luck to the curb and embrace an actual plan for keeping yourself safe. You will no longer walk around on pins and needles about the risk of being assaulted, and you will stop living based on the assumption that nothing like this could ever happen to you. Knowledge is power, and the right training and self defense courses can make a huge difference not only in a dangerous situation but for your day-to-day happiness and well-being too.

Conor McGregor Conor McGregor Addresses Floyd Mayweather's Comments on Racism | Bleacher Report MMA LIFE SHOP

When it comes to learning the ancient art of taijiquan, many people are doing things the wrong way. It is easy to get things the wrong way, for this world wants to push at us until we push back. This sets a standard which this article will attempt to rectify.

The first lesson to be learned, when one begins instruction in an internal art like Tai Chi Chuan, is to be empty. This doesn't mean to let your body go limp, but rather to be relaxed. If one is relaxed, then one is forsaking the muscular system, and this will leave space for an appreciation of their energy system.

Don't manifest energy, as in using your muscles, rather, learn to forsake muscular contraction and accept the sensations of the world. If one is manifesting, if one is putting energy forth, then sensation coming in is unable to get through the energy going out. If one is walking around all day and manifesting energy, also called chi power, then at the very least perceptions will be slanted and out of true.

As the body ceases to push forth energy, the student will begin to grow an appreciation for the space of his body. This is an actual 'universe' wherein the student ceases to use his physical perceptions and instead uses awareness to see all the nooks and crannies, the never ending space, inside his body. Successful in this, the student will become aware that there is energy in the he has to do is relax and let his chi grow.

It can be frustrating when one first starts doing this, the energy evolving in the body will evade the student's attempts to grow it. The student will have to come to the realization that the harder he tries, the harder it is to make chi. And, he will come to an understanding that the less physical energy he uses, the more chi power he will have.

When it first manifests, the energy will be like a huge wave, like water sloshing back and forth in a hot tub. The real reason for the form, and for the body, will become easy to see. The body makes energy, it is like a big old battery, and the form is a method for making that battery work.

With attention to detail, raw energy will become refined chi energy, able to be put into technique as necessary, and the student will become a superior martial artist. The student will see that such things as kung fu forms are a way to discipline oneself mentally to flow the chi power as he desires. At this stage in the martial artists development, the flood gates are wide open, and the student will move on to ever greater experiences.

To conclude, there are several steps from beginner to advanced Tai Chi Chuan. If one can relax and let the body evolve into emptiness, tai chi chuan instruction becomes a catalyst to transform a human being into a highly evolved spiritual being.

Conor McGregor Nate Diaz defeats Conor McGregor by submission in second round of UFC 196 main event MMA LIFE SHOP

The Grand Ultimate Fist, Taiji Quan, but what makes it so superior? What makes Taiji superior is that it takes mental prowess to make work. This is not to insult other martial arts, but an examination of the principles necessary to Tai Chi that should convince most people of the truth of the art.

I've selected three of the many principles that a person must understand to get anywhere in the Grand Ultimate Fist. The first concept is simply nothingness. Most arts will take this idea only so far as having the fist loose before impact, focus, but that is where the true art really starts.

To get anywhere in Taiji one must learn that the entire body must become loose and empty. By becoming loose and empty the body can better sense incoming energies, and thus better use them. This is easily understood if one understands that light travels best through nothingness, and in Tai Chi the body must become a vacuum so pure that senses can travel through it, and emanate from it.

The second principle deals with the making of power. In my base art, Karate, this was developed through taking stances hard and fast and causing the tan tien to explode with power. This is fine, except that tai chi relies on a slower explosion of power from the Tan Tien.

To make power in the Grand Ultimate Art one must take the low stance and grind the motion back and forth between the legs, and round and round in the hips. Power comes up the legs and the tan tien churns out energy. Thus, there is a fine line between emptiness of the body, and the power generation of the legs.

Third principle, and, again, there are many more things to learn, is the idea of slow motion. Many people move slowly, and they marvel at how much their senses grow and how much more world they can take in. Unfortunately, most people don't understand that Tai Chi is, at heart, meant for fighting.

Thus, when people move slowly in Tai Chi Chuan, they must not just relax and move slowly, they must actively push energy with their limbs. This is a point many people miss, but which is crucial to the principle of enacting the imagination, and making the imagination actuate the true abilities of an individual. The feeling should be like swimming, but the waters are imagination, and the resistance is very real, very worthwhile, and very workable when it comes to combat.

There is so much to learn, an eternity to learn, and Matrix Tai Chi is a perfect art to embrace the wudang arts. The trick is to relax the mind and awaken the potentials, the trick is to let oneself absorb knowledge and understand the truth of oneself. The trick is to realize that it is not just art we are talking about when we speak of Taiji Quan, but the actual human spirit.

MMA 24-hour UFC Gym wins approval in Costa Mesa - Daily Pilot MMA LIFE SHOP

Earlier today MMAJunkie translated a report from a Brazlian website which reported that the former consensus #1 Light Heavyweight in the world went into his fight at UFC 76 with a knee injury. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3-0) is not using the injury as an excuse, as he just stated that the injury hindered his training and conditioning. This obviously makes a Liddell vs. Rua fight on the UFC 79 card impossible.

The article did go on to say that Rua will undergo knee surgery this Friday (tomorrow), the California State Athletic Commission did not medically suspend "Shogun" at all, while Forrest Griffin (15-4-0) on the other hand was suspended for 60 days because of the huge cut he has on his forehead from the elbow he took in the second round.

You couldn't tell during the fight that "Shogun" was hurt, but his conditioning was a major factor after the first round, let's hope that we can see "Shogun" return sometime soon.

Martial Art Belt Ranks

Where did they come from and what do they mean?

There are many theories why present day martial art schools use belts and sashes as a ranking system and where the concept of using belts came from. We will discuss two philosophies, one that is widely accepted by many practitioners and another that can be considered as a legend, or story that was passed down by your grandfather. Please keep in mind that the belt ranking system has only been around about 120 years. Throughout this article, keep in mind that not all Martial Arts are the same, your school may have a completely different ranking system than discussed here.

One of the most common arguments comes from the founder of modern day Judo, Dr. Jigoro Kano. An educator and sports enthusiast, Dr. Kano used a black belt to represent his dan (highest-ranking) students in his school, the Kodokan. However, he later realized his kyu (lower ranking) students needed an outward tangible object to acknowledge their accomplishments and encourage their efforts. So he implemented the different colors to signify the progress that his kyu made over time.

Eventually, other Japanese martial art styles such as Karate, Aikido, Kendo, etc. incorporated the Judo belt ranking system when Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan karate master and considered as the ?Father of Modern Karate? demonstrated his martial art style, Shotokan, at the Kodokan.

The other theory, known as ?the belt getting dirty? can be considered as a martial arts folklore. When new students started their training they were given the rank of white belt, signifying a birth or beginning. Students were not allowed to wash their belts, therefore the belt would ?get dirty? the more they practiced. In time the belt would become black, signifying the amount of time the student spent practicing and typically their level of skill.

As a new student in a martial art, you will most likely be given a white belt at the beginning of your training and will progress through a color system on your way toward a black belt. However, contrary to popular belief, the black belt does not signify the end of your training, but rather the beginning. In most arts, once you earn your black belt you are no longer considered a kyu, you are now a dan.

Dan have their own ranking system known as degrees. You are a first degree black belt when you first attain it, over time you can test for your 2nd degree black belt (or 2nd dan) and so on. Most martial arts consider a 10th degree black belt to be the highest level of mastery.

As you train in a martial art, don't get discouraged if you are stuck on a certain belt for a long period of time. It usually takes many years to progress through the belts and this is actually one of the lessons that participating in Martial Arts will teach you. Progressing through the belts requires a great deal of time, dedication, self-confidence, patience and self-discipline. The skills you learn in your martial arts training will apply to almost every aspect of your life and will help you succeed in areas where you never thought Martial Arts would help.

If you would like to learn more about Martial Arts or are interested in finding a school in your area, go to .

MMA Home Bodyweight Workout for Speed & Power in MMA MMA LIFE SHOP

You have countless techniques used for submitting opponents in both the MMA and the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu martial arts. You will have many grapplings and striking techniques to submit your opponent. Some of the techniques are not allowed in all martial arts. However, if you are practicing the Mixed Martial Arts or the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, then you have a wide selection of techniques available for use at your guise. Mastering most of these techniques will enable you to stay abreast your opponent and be able to outsmart him or her. Among others are the ankle choke, the kimura lock, the rear naked choke, the open guard and the collar choke. You also have techniques on escapes from the dominating skills your opponent may display.

The clock choke is one of the commonly used technique in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as the Mixed Martial Arts. In the clock choke, you make sure your opponent is on his knees. Focus your weight on his or her back, around the center area, making sure s/he does not roll away. Strive to open the lapel on his or her side making sure you pass your arm beneath his or her armpit. Grip the collar hard, sending your hand across his or her neck. Using the arm under the armpit, grab the other side of the collar. Exert your weight on his or her shoulders so his or her head goes down. Pull your legs forward. While you pull your legs forward, also pull hard on the collars to apply the choke.

Before applying this technique, you should be able to determine that you are in the ideal position. This is important because your opponent may possess the reverse tactics that may make the situation turn against you. It is also important to keep so close to the opponent when you apply this technique so s/he does not get the chance to escape or to strike you.

If you want to master the BJJ techniques, there are lots of books about grappling arts and fighting techniques that can be of great help. Some of these are written by masters who have studied and practiced the techniques in various occasions. You may take time to go through all the techniques. The more techniques you master, the greater chance you have of defeating any opponent or wading off their tactics.

It is also important to learn the escape techniques that are used to wade off an attack. This could be more important sometimes than the attacking techniques. Some of these techniques should be use with a lot of caution while in training sessions. Most of the chokes are used to stop the flow of blood into the brain which may momentarily make the opponent black out. Sometimes, if you are on training and your partner tries to escape in a dangerous way from some of these techniques, it is best to let go than to endanger their lives.

MMA Georges St-Pierre Talks Mixed Martial Arts & 'Kickboxer: Vengeance' MMA LIFE SHOP

I have learned that you can?t honestly give yourself to anyone unless your needs are met first. Initially it sounds selfish, but it?s a healthy kind of selfishness. In the safety briefing before a flight, the attendant reminds you to fasten your own oxygen mask before you help someone else. You will be in a much better position to help people in your black belt school if you are grossing $30,000 per month, because you are taking care of yourself first, rather than grossing $10,000 because you are ?helping the children.?

The reason you sign the lease, risk your money, risk lawsuits, risk losing everything is not to help the children. The reason is to build wealth for your family.

This is a key mindset, and the top black belt school owners are crystal clear on it.

The purpose of your school is to build wealth for your family and to maintain a career in the martial arts. You accomplish this by becoming the best teacher in your town and having a strong business system to support your teaching, so that you can reach and help more people. You create wealth by helping people.

Imagine you are the owner of a television network. You don?t take a risk like that just to have shows that will help the children. You offer some educational programs in the public interest and others that are pure entertainment. But you bought the network to create wealth for your family. You do that by hiring the best talent, equipment, and programming possible.

This is especially true when you have a family. It?s simply not fair to drag your spouse and children through the life of a martial artist if you are not going to build a future for them.

The purpose of launching your martial arts business is to send your kids to good schools, to provide your spouse with a feeling of security and certainty that things are going to be OK financially and to give you the opportunity to retire in dignity. You accomplish this by being the best martial arts school owner and instructor in your town. Once you adopt this attitude, business becomes less stressful, because it?s easier to make decisions when you have Clarity of Purpose.

Chase your passion but don't chase away profits or your families' future doing so.

As Abraham Lincoln put it, ?We can?t help the poor by becoming one of them.? I heard one of my mentors, a plastic surgeon, speak on the phone with a patient who asked for a discount or payment terms. He said, ?Miss, this is how I earn my income. You can make payments and, when they are all done, we can do the surgery; otherwise, we?re going to have to wait until you can afford it.? That is Clarity of Purpose. Plastic surgery, like martial arts, is a choice.

Western society will never take martial arts seriously as a business, activity, or potential career if we all live hand to mouth. How can you teach the success life skills so popular today if you have never experienced success as a teacher? Would you want someone to teach you how to run a martial arts school who has never even owned a business, much less a martial arts school? I hope not.

Cardinal Rule ?Never sacrifice the needs of your family for your students.

The most successful school owners are crystal clear that the purpose of their school is to build wealth for their families. Create profit ? not poverty ? from your passion.

MMA British Aikido Board National Nepotism Seminar 2004 MMA LIFE SHOP

The British Aikido Board

Disastrous National Nepotism Seminar 2004 ? 99 Students

By Henry Ellis Co-author of Positive Aikido.

( BAB Founder member - now resigned )

For many years The British Aikido Board ( BAB ) have shown no interest what-so-ever in the true history of British Aikido, to be fair to the BAB, they have in the recent past shown a great deal of interest and support for the false history of British Aikido for which they have now publicly apologised, the apology to Henry Ellis by the chairman Mr Vincent Sumpter pictured left, can be viewed on this site.

Kenshiro Abbe Sensei 1915 - 1985..

When Kenshiro Abbe Sensei first stepped on British soil in 1955 he brought with him the knowledge of many Budo arts, Aikido being one of them. Abbe Sensei also brought his Aikido based philosophy of Kyu-Shin-Do. This was the inception of British Aikido. Yet no where in the BAB literature will you find any reference to Kenshiro Abbe Sensei by name or the origins of Aikido within the UK. In the year 2000 the BAB were happy to help promote Mr Pooles proven fraudulent claims to 47 yrs of Aikido, I am plesaed to add that the BAB have now taken this claim by Mr Poole from the BAB Associations information website. I personally received my invitation from the BAB to attend Mr Poole?s event, that was the start of the long running British Aikido Board Controversy which was resolved at the mediation meeting 6th July 2005 with Sport England/BAB/Ellis. Yet sadly, the BAB have never ever recognised or promoted the true history of British Aikido or its founder Kenshiro Abbe Sensei. The reason for this article is that following the success of the great Kenshiro Abbe Sensei Celebrations 14th May 2005 I am informed that the BAB plan a similar event next year which would be an insult to the memory of Abbe Sensei and to the handful of Abbe Sensei direct students.

It should be pointed out that the spate of attacks on the credibilty of British Aikido History - Kenshiro Abbe Sensei and Henry Ellis have all come from within the BAB, some are executive members along with prominent members of the British Aikido Board associations. These are the very people that the BAB members would expect to promote and protect their proud lineage. Below are a few examples.

One: Ms Shirley Timms the British Aikido Boards secretary, totally ignored the facts-photos-evidence against Mr Jack Poole's false history which were personally handed to her by Henry Ellis, prior to Mr Poole being presented with his coveted bronze samurai statue in Oct 2000.

Two: Mr Toni Davies the previous BAB chairman, deliberately lied at a general meeting to protect Mr Poole's false history. Read the Sport England meeting minutes.

Three: Mr Vincent Sumpter The BAB chairman once supported the claims of Mr Poole by stating " We have no formal records to prove or disprove either claim " DUH

Four: Mr John Burn.* BAB Executive *- *BAB Communications Officer* - Very Serious libel attack on the name of Henry Ellis. renews his attack 10th June 2005 stating " This only serves to amuse me ".

Five: Jim Johnston. The then *BAB Press Officer*. Promoting the fraudulent claims of Mr Poole whilst fully knowing the truth.

Six: Mr Dominick Foster.* BAB Executive * - Attends the Kenshiro Abbe Celebrations and states to a VIP guest "What is this Celebration all about " he then states that next year is the true celebration of British Aikido by the BAB.

Seven: Mr Jack Poole.* BAB Senior Principal Coach *. The Jack Poole Biography..( a catalogue of lies. ).

Eight: The KenShinKai.* Prominent BAB Association*. Gave 100% Support for the JP Bio..Their open letter taken from the NACD is an absolute classic and can be read on this website.

Nine: Mr Gwynne Jones.* Prominent BAB member *. Dis-credits 6 of the first 8 of the early dan grades in MartialArts Illustrated article " Bends the Branch..Issue June 05. visit the National Aikido Database forum for more information.

British Aikido Board Statement Damned Forever

Ten: This is without doubt the most disgraceful of them all.. * The BAB Chairman *Toni Davis stated in the year 2000

?We the British Aikido Board are not the custodians of British Aikido History and

therefore have no interest in the same?

Eleven: Sadly, with the arrival of the new BAB chairman Mr Vincent Sumpter nothing changed, he made the statement below despite the factual information available to him and his executive, We must not forget that Mr Sumpter had the only four surviving students of Abbe Sensei for Aikido within the BAB.

Twelve: On the 17th April 2002 The *BAB Chairman * Mr Vincent Sumpter wrote to Henry Ellis with reference to the history of British Aikido. He then made the following crass statement in his support for the BAB stance on Mr Jack Poole.

?The period in question predates the creation of the BAB by a significant amount of time and therefore we have no formal records to prove or disprove either claim.?

Thirteen: The Kenshiro Abbe 50th Celebration Seminar

May 14th Crystal Palace London

720 Participants ?Guests ? Spectators

At the Sport England / BAB / Ellis mediation meeting 6th July 2004 where the BAB were reprimanded by Sport England and instructed to give Henry Ellis a full public apology.

At the end of the meeting ( The minutes for this meeting can be viewed on this site .( ), Henry Ellis appraised Ms Sadie Mason of Sport England of the proposed plans for the Kenshiro Abbe event, Ms Mason suggested that we should involve the BAB in our plans as part of the reconciliation of British Aikido, Henry Ellis agreed.

Henry Ellis offered Ms Mason's suggestion to the Abbe Event Committee, the suggestion was unanimously accepted 100%. The BAB executive were then approached and invited to send a representative ( any one of its 15,000 members ) of the BAB to attend our meetings and report back on our progress, this offer was rejected out of hand.

Mr Vincent Sumpter

?No matter your Pretence, you are what you are and nothing more!?

Kenshiro Abbe Sensei

Not deterred, we then invited the BAB chairman Mr Vincent Sumpter to attend The Kenshiro Abbe 50th Celebration as a VIP guest, to pay the respects of the BAB membership of which he represents . There were many BAB members attending, proving that this event was not about personal differences ? styles or what organisation you belong to, I was pleased to see students from Mr Poole?s organisation who were also made very welcome. This event was about one thing and one thing only ? Kenshiro Abbe Sensie ? with demonstrations of the early aikido and its proud standards, with Sensei Eastman showing various techniques to show the influences that the different early teachers brought to the UK in those early days.

Students trained with other students of various styles and associations with a friendliness not often seen in modern Aikido circles. this event went a long way to promote all that is good in Aikido. I believe that the spirit of Abbe Sensei would be very proud of this special day to his memory.

Another crass statement from Mr Vincent Sumpter 27th March 2004 made before the Sport England Mediation meeting 6th July 2005. In an unwarranted attack on the genuine aikidoka who supported the British Aikido Controversy debate in its defence of the true history of British Aikido and the Aikido history of Abbe Sensei and his disciples.

Mr Sumpter bleats.

?The Boards conscience is clear. like all the practitioners of Aikido who contribute to this ?controversy ? Mr Humm appears to have forgotten the meaning of the word ?Aikido ? ? Harmony of Sprit to find a Way ? The ?Controversy ? website feeds hatred, ill ? feeling, bitterness and discord. For my part, as an aikidoka who is passionate about the art and the etiquette that goes with it, I will therefore not add to the feeding frenzy this website generates. I can?t stop what is going on but I can turn the other cheek.?

With reference to the above statement by Mr Sumpter I should remind the reader to visit on this website to read both the Sport England minutes and Mr Sumpters apology to Mr Ellis which can only be considered an apology to all those that supported the ?Controversy ? in the name of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei including the named Mr David Humm.

In response to our invitation to attend as a VIP guest to the Abbe event Mr Sumpter replied stating that he graciously accepted our invitation. Just before the event he changed his mind without explanation, suggesting that we allow Mr Ralph Reynolds to represent the BAB.

Mr Reynolds had a far more important role to play as one of the main teachers at this event where he was delighted to take part as an original student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei.

This was such an important event with many good students who were members of the BAB, yet, the British Aikido Board were not represented at this event to pay tribute to such a great master and the founding father of British Aikido.

If Mr Sumpter had attended he would have seen a Martial Arts Spectacular never before seen in the United Kingdom, where students from many organisations met and renewed old friendships, there were many more that made new friendships.

In almost 50 years of Aikido I have never before experienced the special atmosphere that electrified the great hall at Crystal Palace from the moment the Taiko Drummers started to play on this day of celebration in the name of Abbe Sensei. I never ever thought in my life time that I would ever see an event to eclipse the great event at The Royal Albert Hall in 1963 with Abbe Sensei. I knew on Saturday the 14th of May that I was now witnessing the greatest Aikido event in my 48 years of Aikido. I am not an emotional man but I will admit that as I looked over the balcony of the concourse onto the tatami area with the sound of the Taiko Drummers and the hundreds of students and guests gathering below I was unable to stop the trickle of a few emotional tears as I realised I was witnessing something very special.

MR SUMPTER, you too missed something very special, whilst you sat 40 miles away at home ignoring the tribute to the father of British Aikido, others travelled from all parts of the UK ? USA ? France ? Holland ? Germany ? Czechoslovakia. etc.

Whilst you sat at home it was a wonderful moment when Sensei Bill Woods who was the personal aide to Kenshiro Abbe Sensei and without doubt the most influential force in the history British Martial Arts, made a supreme effort despite his serious illness to pay his respects to the memory of Abbe Sensei.

Also whilst you sat at home, Sensei Bill Stopps the personal Aide to Matsutharu Otani Sensei who despite his age and ill health also attended and thanked me wholeheartedly for inviting him as a special guest, and for the wonderful day he had experienced.

Whilst you sat at home just 40 miles away, Sensei Robin Otani and his two sons, the descendents of Matsutharu Otani Sensei travelled all the way from Devon to attend.

Sensei Joe Curran travelled all the way from Newcastle and Sensei Mike Nery travelled from Bristol. Sensei Dave Rogers travelled 7000 miles from New Mexico USA as did Sensei Al Montemar and Mr Chad Hatcher who flew over from Texas USA to pay their respects. Whilst you sat at home there were many others that travelled long journeys to attend.

Unlike you Mr Sumpter these people wanted to attend.

You missed some of the finest displays of the Budo arts that any martial artist is ever likely to witness at any one event, a truly lasting experience for all those that made the effort to attend.

I was always under the impression that it was the sworn duty of any chairman to always do what was best for his organisation and its members.

As the previous BAB chairman Toni Davies will always be rembered for nothing more than his lies and unswerving support for Mr Poole.

The present chairman Mr Sumpter will always be remembered as the BAB chairman who snubbed the Kenshiro Abbe Memorial to pay tribute to our founding father on behalf of his membership.

Try Try Try Again

After the disastrous ?British Aikido Board Nepotism Seminar 2004? with only 99 students attending out of a membership of approx 15000, the BAB have decided not to hold it's 2005 National Seminar .

They are of course fully aware of the fantastic success of the Kenshiro Abbe Celebrations. With 720 participants ? honoured guests ? spectators.

The BAB having failed miserably in its four year support for Mr Jack Poole to change the history of British Aikido. They now appear to have a renewed interest in the true history of British Aikido and its founder Kenshiro Abbe.

No matter whatever the British Aikido Board do, that damning statement below will hang over their shameless heads for ever and a day.

British Aikido Board Statement Damned Forever

The BAB Chairman Toni Davis stated in the year 2000

?We the British Aikido Board are not the custodians of British Aikido History and

therefore have no interest in the same.?

If you have been interested in the arts or just started your training, then you may have thought to yourself why all the different l arts students are fixated on dragons and bears. Why a lot of the schools are called either 'Fist Of Dragonfire' or 'The White Tiger Something Or Other'. This attraction for wild exotic animals comes from the ancient Chinese martial arts.

The tiger was once a great feared predator in southern China for many years. Warriors learned to appreciate its many qualities such as its cunning and alertness and its ability to attack prey. The dragon, although not a real creature has always been revered in China and is said to have qualities of fearlessness and invincibility. It is so revered that the dragon is also a sign of the Chinese zodiac.

The monkey is also accredited with inspiring many battle goers to incorporate monkey movements in their fighting techniques. The lion is also revered in the martial arts world as a hunter who dominates his surroundings. When the Chinese New Year starts many martial arts schools perform lion dances in parades to emulate the lion's greatness. In China the lion represents the heart of the martial arts school.

There are also many other animals that are celebrated for the varying characteristics they bring to martial arts, from a praying mantis to an eagle. Over the years the arts have adopted the Chinese animals across the western world by embracing these qualities, as lets face it all adds to the mystique and attraction of martial arts. You will more likely than not see a dragon another animal stenciled on the school door, even if it is not practicing a Chinese martial art.

In addition to emulate their chosen animal in battle, martial students also attempt to build character. Building character requires you to understand certain qualities we humans share. This is the belief of martial arts philosophy and the correct mindset. When you start your training in your chosen art, early on you are introduced to the concept of chi. Chi is the life force and energies that all animals possess. By focusing on this energy you can improve a martial artist's skill as well as everyday problems of stress. By using Chi you can make yourself stronger than any aerobic class ever will whilst helping you deal with everyday tasks and problems. This is truly a great way to inspire the body and mind.

If you are into the Martial Arts just to beat people up, to beer over the latest UFC results, this article is not for you. If, however, you think the martial arts are a vehicle to become not just physically and mentally stronger, but maybe even enable you to evolve as a human being, then this is the article for you. This is a straightforward and logical look at the three major steps necessary to evolution through the martial arts.

The first step of the martial arts is the level of the body. This is nothing more than making sure you have all the necessary body parts to do the martial arts, and that they are in relative working condition. To get started on the first level one need merely understand that, on a body level, the martial arts are nothing more than good calisthenics.

To make if from the first level to the second level, however, one needs to accomplish a concept which I have taken the liberty of labeling CBM. In the past masters would refer to this concept as utilizing the body as one unit, which was correct, but not always accurate in description. CBM means Coordinated Body Motion, and it is when the body parts all work together in synchronized fashion.

With CBM all body motion must begin at the same time. And, all motion must end at the same time. And, all motion from start to stop must take into account and coordinate the size, mass, length, arc, and so on of individual motions and parts.

When one accomplishes CBM, especially through a classical martial art, one's intention is realized. Intention is your desire to achieve something, the working part of the essential idea of whatever end goal you are aiming for. This is the thing that is commonly, and with varying degree of error, described as Chi. That chi, or intention, can be described from so many different viewpoints and experiences is what makes it so confusing.

When one has CBMed one's body, the next level is to CBM one's art. I call this process Matrixing, and Matrixing is an actual science. When one starts to apply matrixing principles to their martial art they must examine all moves, all forms, and follow certain scientific principles to align that art. Like CBM before, one must take into account the relativity of all movements and align them to the concept of the form.

One could say that Coordinated Body Motion is for inside the body, and Matrixing is for outside the body, and while this isn't entirely accurate, there is a sizable amount of truth to the statement. The Martial Arts, you see, while they work, could work a whole heck of a lot better. There has been so much interbreeding of cultures and interests and viewpoints and so on, that the martial arts fairly well mushed up.

When one accomplishes the second step of the martial arts, and matrixes what he is doing, the true grandeur of the arts is revealed. Senses expand and take in a whole new world, people see what they were unable to see before, and the blind awake. CBM, Matrixing, human desire to undertake and succeed, these are at the heart of the martial arts, and these are what the true martial artist must seek to understand and employ on his journey to the truth of his soul.

Stretcher bars are the wooden frames that artists and painters use to make a frame so that a piece of art can be adjusted properly. These are like wooden support to a canvas art. A good quality stretcher bar makes a canvas art firm and alive and prevents it from being perished or crumbled down. We can't imagine the existence of a canvas art work in the absence of a stretcher bar. It is vital for the design, art and photographic industry as it makes an art work look enticing and impressive. When it comes to have the highest quality frame product that offers firm support to an art work, we need to check various facts and points that are necessary for finding a complete and quality based stretcher bar.

The first and the foremost factor that always matters the most when you decide to have a canvas frame is a customised and integrated product that meets or exceeds all sorts of wants and expectations of artists, painters and art lovers. A canvas frame of your choice and preference should be end user friendly so that they don't find it hard to handle and use according to their personal needs. MMA "NEW ""IT’S TIME! S&R PODCAST I'M JOINED BY OCTAGON GIRLS @Vanessa_Hanson & @Chrissy_Blair plus @TheSingleLife LISTEN UP by clicking link in my Instagram bio or at iTunes Soundcloud & BruceBuffer.com

Do you know how to fade into the background, becoming "invisible" to passersby? How are your ninja skills? Are you like a shadow? Here's a quick and practical story, 100% true, of how a little martial-arts experimentation helped me to develop "ninja-like" qualities... more or less.

Normally, I like to talk to people, do a little magic for the nice ones that I meet, and in general, have human contact when I am out and about. I am friendly -- what my mother calls "haimish."

Well, during my I.C.U. watches at the hospital (for a family member), I didn't really feel like talking to people. When I'd go outside for a little fresh air, the night security would come over and check me out, and "jaw my ear off."

I also got the "may I help you find someone?" question when I was in the hall, waiting for some sterile procedure to be performed, where I wasn't allowed in the room. (I also stepped out to allow privacy, at needed times.)

It was hard to be alone at the hospital.

How to Be Alone in a Crowd

So, early in the 5-day watch, I adjusted my behavior. I think these adjustments and the end result will interest you from a "practical martial-arts perspective":

In the beginning of my behavior adjustment, I tried to hide in the shadows, in order to avoid being noticed and engaged in conversation. It worked most of the time, but occasionally, one of the more alert guards checked the shadows. Oh, well.

One unwanted dialogue was enough. I adjusted, again....

I seemed to have more luck when I didn't hide all the way back in the shadow. I actually started looking for spots that I thought would go unnoticed by people. I also liked a variation in vertical-surface texture, like where there was a wall, a small walk-through space, and then a fat, cement column. The variety of shadow, light, and surface seemed to help me avoid the scrutiny of the guards better than before.

It was very important to me to be allowed to engage in my own thoughts -- for once.

Invisibility Strategy Change for Daytime

When my wife volunteered to take all of the rest of the night watches and leave me the days, my strategy changed a bit. My nighttime shadows vanished. No more invisibility.

My new goal was to figure out how to stand in a hallway without being approached. Noticed, maybe -- but ignored.

By the fifth day, I was able to stand quietly where doctors, nurses, custodial crew, dietitians, guests, patients, and administrators passed constantly without acknowledgment.

Note: Actually, a couple of the doctors gave me a warm smile, and one even said, "Good morning, sir." But that was it.

Of course, we think of the bad people and maybe the wannabe ninjas hiding in the shadows. But do you think there could be value for you in knowing this skill?

Martial-Arts Tips to Be Invisible

What about being able to shun the attention of people when you don't want to be approached? Here are just a few tips to get you started thinking this way:

Try to stay out of the flow of traffic.

Don't face a door where lots of people are exiting.

Wear "bland" clothing, probably casual, nothing formal or business-like that might get you noticed in a hospital.

I think you can take it from here.
