Owning a dog can be a first alert for home self defense. Own a dog or a recording of a dog on a device set on a timer. Periodically change the hours on the timers. Make sure to get the dog licensed and be aware of any dog laws in your area. Train the dog not to "cry wolf" at the sound of any noise.

Dogs have been used for many years, even centuries, as defenders of man. Most of the kings and queens from history used dogs as a first defense. There are many pictures in history books and paintings of royalty with their dogs. Many breeds of dogs were created for better defense of their owners and the next generation of royalty.

Owning a dog can be a marvelous thing. Dogs are "mans best friend" for a number of reasons, not just for self defense or protection. Taking the dog for a walk can give you some much needed exercise. The walk in the neighborhood allows you to meet your neighbors. When you are able to know your neighbors and they know you, protection of the entire neighborhood is enhanced. With everyone working together a watch can be started. Many neighborhoods now have a neighborhood watch program. These areas are typically safer because everyone is working in unison to protect themselves and their friends, the neighbors.

The true worth of a dog for self defense purposes though lies in the behavior of the animal. If the dog constantly barks at every little noise and every person that comes within the dogs hearing or sight distance, there is no benefit to the owner. You want to train the dog to bark when there is something out of the ordinary. There are many books and videos on dog training and professional dog trainers available. Make use of them to enjoy your dog and provide yourself with a long time friend and defender.

UFC Holly Holm Punches Ronda Rousey At UFC 193 Weigh Ins MMA LIFE SHOP

Strategy is a necessity when dealing with conflict and solving problems. Winning your fight is a 'problem' in itself, therefore having a good strategy is a pre-requisite. Here are ten strategic principles, inspired by Sun Tzu's 'Art of War', that you could bear in mind and adopt when fighting in the Octagon:

1. Be united within yourself; feel harmonised in your purpose. If you are focussed and single-minded, you will succeed.

2. Be flexible in how you fight your opponent. Be prepared to change your strategy and tactics according to the prevailing situation.

3. Use deception to fool your opponent. Use feints and diversions to confuse and unsettle him. Appear to be disorientated and confused, then strike!

4. Keep your strategy hidden before you fight. Appear quiet and inscrutable.

5. Have a plan of action before hand, based on all the calculations you have made from evaluating a range of factors that will have a bearing on your ability to win. Implement this plan, but be prepared to change it as required (see point 2).

6. Do not deplete your energy reserves during the fight. A prolonged bout may please the crowd, but may not help you win. Be mindful of depleted strength defeating you!

7. Know when to fight the opponent, and when to avoid him. Watch for openings, then strike.

8. Attack your opponent's weakness, not his strength. Try not to engage him in a prolonged struggle, instead seek to subdue him by striking at his vulnerability.

9. Seek to know your opponent by finding out as much as possible about his capabilities, skill and training. Gather as much intelligence as you can about him.

10. As ever, know your opponent... but also know yourself! If you know about both of these factors, then you could win every fight you compete in!

Two types of fighting exist in the world of MMA fighting and they are professionals and amateurs. Each is governed by their own set of rules and have a different style of fighting during competitions. Professional fighters have more moves than do amateurs and a type of fighting that allows them greater force when attacking their opponent.

Different types of fighting lead to different types of MMA fighting gloves for amateurs and professionals. The MMA gloves are both designed similarly with the open fingers and palm to allow the glove to give the fighter full mobility and proper ventilation. To make sure that the MMA gloves are firmly on the fighter's hand, a wrist and loop band is used. This needs to be made sure that it not fastened too tightly so as to cut off circulation to the hand.

The padding surrounding the top of the hands is the main difference between amateur and professional MMA gloves. Still beginners needing hours of practice, amateurs need to have their MMA gloves protect them enough so as to prevent injuries to the hands. While the padding is less in professional MMA gloves, a special foam is used in the padding to protect the hands in pro MMA training gloves. This allows sufficient protection without reducing the power of the punch against one's opponent.

Another type of pro fight gloves uses a Y-Volar type of design that prevents the hand from shifting inside the glove. It enables better grappling ability on the ground as well as adding power behind each punch. It has a dual cross directional strap system that also gives more punching power and additional wrist support. These are the standard four-ounce fight gloves that are commonly used in competitions and each glove is independently tested to match the highest standards.

These professional fight gloves need about a week or two of breaking in before they start to feel really comfortable. During the first week, 120 inch or under hand wraps should be used as the MMA gloves will not fit you until they are broken in. Then you can move on to the 180 inch hand wraps after the second week when the MMA fight gloves fit your hands better. In general, these gloves look good and offer more punching power.

Weight and measurements are used to determine the correct size for the Pro MMA gloves. If you weigh 175 pounds or under, you need the small/medium or large/extra-large loves if you weigh over 175 pounds. If the sizing of the MMA fight gloves does not work for you this way, then there are several measurements you can take to find the right size for your hands.

For example, if the width across the knuckles at the top of the hand measures less than 3A? inches, then you need small/medium MMA training gloves, otherwise large/extra-large fight gloves will fit better. Another measurement to take is the width of the palms across the middle of the hand. If this measurement is also less than 3A? inches, then you need small/medium MMA gloves, otherwise large/extra-large MMA gloves are recommended. Other measurements for premium fight gloves include the wrist circumference and the length from the wrist to the middle finger. Getting the right sized MMA training equipment is important for top performance in professional fighting.

UFC Huge Title Fight Announcement For UFC 205 MMA LIFE SHOP

My short answer to the question posed here is: Perhaps. Indeed, we've all heard the mantra that Hollywood agents and reps are stalking around for the next best literary property to option for some later project. But then again - for you comic collectors out there - we've also heard about that latest comic that's sold for $1 million, while you're left standing at your garage sale with your long box of 20,000 mid-grade comics that you can barely pawn off for a good sushi dinner. The sad fact of the writers market is that unless the self-contained clique of all-knowing gatekeepers (i.e. the publishing industry) have chosen you from out of the gaggle of geese to be prepped, stuffed, and commercially peacocking for the buying masses, you're flat out of luck.

Now, some of you who graduated, perchance, with your newly minted degrees in Creative Writing might still at least be hopeful that your expensively bought education - the one your parents took out the variable rate mortgage for - will at least earn you a dash of wise advice from the "successful" Professor-Writer-In-Residence who is going to tell you exactly how he made it to the "big time" back in 1965 selling an option for the proposal to his one uncredited screenplay, Valley of The Cannibal Queens. Perhaps he might even send you off packing with his noble suggestion that you "break in" by submitting your short story to a depressingly low circulation literary periodical - If A Tree Falls In The Forest: The Literary Fiction Quarterly.

But as the years pass, and you see that you've maxed out your credit line buying guides to instruct you on how to to compose The-Cover-Letter-That-Can't-Be-Denied, the art of The-Pitch-That-Can't-Fail, or Story-Ideas-With-Can't-Miss-Subliminal-Commercial-Appeal, you might start to wonder that perhaps you've staked your life's goal on a bet you just can't cash in.

And yes, you might even go through the typical bleak terminal stages of artistic atrophy: Denial. Rage. Depression. Application To Law School.

As for me, in case you couldn't guess, I consider myself to be on the optimistic side of things. My approach - inspired by the George W. Bush School of Hopeful Presidential Legacies - is that I'm playing for the far-off future generations, when everyone who rejected, ignored, and shunned my artistic output will have long since descended to their graves, leaving a shadowy race of cave-dwelling, mucous-swilling Morlocks to truly recognize and validate the genius work I always knew was mine only to claim.

So, back to the question: Can you make money off your short story? Maybe yes, maybe no. But in the end, what's money? You're a writer, for chrissake. A visionary. Your true job, before you die, is to play it for posterity - and those mucous-swilling Morlocks.

Have you noticed that often the most valuable advice is the hardest to accept? This is especially true in martial-arts acquisition. Are you getting in the way of your own martial-arts learning? Is this common internet attitude your problem?

Free Martial Arts Secrets

There are many internet surfers who believe that all information on the internet should be free. Some of these information-for-all promoters are martial artists.

Note: I approve of free information, as well. I own and write for several information web sites. While I like free articles and pdfs as much as the next person, I understand that NOT ALL martial arts should be that easily accessible.

Be logical -- do you really believe that the "real secrets" of martial arts are being published in free articles on the internet? Be honest with yourself.

It's just not logical.

Let's take my writing as an example: I write free articles, free reports, and free ebooklets on martial arts. I try to put good, useful information into each. But the amount of secrets of martial arts that you'll find in each is, well, limited.

Still, you'll find useful, but not complete, information.

The next level are the paid ebooks and books that I write. Of course, I put a lot more into each of those, for several reasons:

Customers who pay expect more than they'd get from a freebie ebooklet.

It limits the amount of eyes that will see these more private techniques. (I can take a book or eBook out of print any time I want.)

Paying acts as a filter. Only the more serious martial artists, those willing to pay, get to see the "great stuff."

It's easier to take legal action against the class of freebie seeker who doesn't respect intellectual property.

Psychologically, customers value information that costs money more than what they can find for free. Don't ask me why, but it's true.

Good Martial-Arts Information, But ...

Don't get me wrong; not all free martial arts information on the internet is garbage. Quite the contrary. You'll find useful basics, with limitations.

After all, I try to write practical, free information. It convinces a lot of people to buy my paid information. This, in turn, puts a few pennies in my pocket, which allows me the time to write more free and paid martial-arts how-to ebooks and articles.

This makes sense, doesn't it?

The free information on the internet is good information, but it really does have limitations:

It's often basic.

Much of it is not complete enough to be of practical use.

Since a lot of writers aren't that creative, they paraphrase what they read other places. The information becomes widespread and old hat. (The "same old, same old" is a pet peeve of mine.)

Blocking Your Own Martial-Arts Success

Now, let's get back to the real point of this article: your attitude toward paying for martial-arts information on the net.

I am not suggesting that you go out there and buy every martial-arts eBook and course that you see. Far from it -- there is a lot of worthless junk for sale out there.

Note: In fact, never buy any martial-arts book or eBook on the net, if it doesn't come with a money-back guarantee. This is of paramount importance. Really. Don't get scammed.

On the other hand, if you never spend money on your martial-arts learning, then:

you are saying a lot about whether you value yourself enough to spend a little on your safety and improvement.

you could be blocking yourself with your "free only" attitude.

you should know that there are others who "are" finding out the secrets that you are unwilling to learn.

Do what it takes to improve in the martial arts. Break down your own barriers.

In order to be an authentic martial arts person, you will need to wear MMA clothes. Despite the millions of martial arts enthusiast living around the world and finding things to disagree with one another about, one thing they are in complete agreement about is the need for trendy martial arts clothing. Obviously, the clothing alone isn't going to make you the next Jackie Chan or grasshopper. Wearing the right clothes isn't going to morph you into a pro. But wearing the right clothes can definitely help you improve your style, build your self-confidence and present a professional appearance to others. Remember, in order to talk the talk, you need to walk the walk.

All forms of sports and organized physical activity have their own sets of clothing and gear. Baseball players, for example, have complete uniforms and special helmets. Basketball players also have uniforms, and comfortable, supportive shoes that grip the shiny floor and provide good ankle support. All those ball-related sports also have a line of jerseys and gear made for the fans and non-pro players alike, something to wear around town, paying tribute to your favorite teams or players. Likewise, those in the sport of martial arts have their own gear including hand wraps and mouth-guards, MMA clothes and trendy martial arts clothing.

One form of trendy martial arts clothing is the Ninja suit. The Ninja suit is exactly what you're thinking of: a snugly fitting black body suit that is strapped and/or tired into place with the use of belts and straps. Along with the suit is a matching set of gloves, a pair of boots and a face mask that obscures all but the eyes. Not only does the suit make you look good, but this particular piece of MMA clothes also helps you move about freely while keeping quiet. Remember, part of being a Ninja is being a stealth fighter. He or she should not be seen nor heard, and should also be nocturnal.

Bottom line, if you want to be serious about martial arts, then you need to invest in the right type of MMA clothing. Trendy Martial Arts Clothing lines will come and go, both for martial artists and even everyday people who want to be different, but the good stuff is here to stay. Martial Arts Clothing is one serious aspect of the sport. These clothing and related items can be used for defensive moves as well as offensive ones. Before you hit the mats with your gear, make sure you have suited up with the right type of MMA clothes and weapons. You wouldn't want to be caught unprepared or look unprofessional, would you?

UFC Georges St. Pierre Confirms UFC Return, Bout With Bisping Is Close MMA LIFE SHOP

One of the most heard claims of the various martial arts systems and styles is the devotees claiming that their system provides realistic self defense techniques and, in many cases, even claiming that there system is the best for self defense. A very bold claim considering the often unpredictable nature of the street thugs attack methods.

The emergence of mixed martial arts as a fighting system (working on the assumption that we accept this mixed martial arts as a distinct fighting system like Karate or Jiu Jitsu) has led to debate about whether it is the best system for self defense.

Certainly, in respect of the techniques that we train in mixed martial arts, and the attributes that we develop in our drilling and sparring, it is the closest that we will get to train and spar at a safe contact level with methods that will be effective in a real street fight.

However, as with all systems of martial arts it is still training for a controlled fight scenario that the combatants have both agreed to and prepared for. There are also rules that forbid us using the most effective weapons against the most debilitating targets, and a referee to enforce them. In addition, it is a guaranteed one on one fight, usually between opponents closely matched in weight and experience, with no weapons involved.

Learning mixed martial arts will certainly provide us with techniques that will increase our chances of prevailing in a street self defense situation, as we are exposed to a wide range of potential attacks in both standup and ground situations.

We must, however, compliment this with components that address those areas that occur in the self defense situation but are not adequately prepared for when learning mixed martial arts. I would also add that these areas should be addressed in all martial art systems that want to responsibly provide their followers with an effective self defense methodology.

1)???????? Develop street awareness skills that teach you and your students how to recognize potential danger so that you can either avoid them or be prepared to deal with them.

2)???????? Develop a "non-victim" mind-set and body posture so that a potential attacker identifies you as a dangerous target and that they would be better seeking out another victim.

3)???????? Include adrenal stress training so that you do not "freeze" when a potential assailant "interviews" you. This is an aspect of self defense that the majority of martial arts schools do not address. The "butterflys in the stomach" effect before a mixed martial arts or Muay Thai match is similar but not the same as here the fight conditions are not controlled and the effect of adrenal stress can be much greater.

4)???????? In addition to the fighting skills trained be sure and train eye gouges, palm heels, throat grabs, groin and knee strikes son that the confrontation can be dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible.

5)???????? Develop effective strategies for standing back up if the fight goes to the ground and for dealing with multiple assailants ? don't kid yourself this is tough even if you are a seasoned fighter.

6)???????? Street effective pre-emptive offensive "gap bridging" and broad-spectrum defensive cover techniques that enable you to engage the opponent with a high probability of establishing control.

In summary, mixed martial arts will provide you with a very effective technique and fight attribute base for self defense, however, you must compliment your training with self defense specific striking tools and a fear management psychological mind-set.

Most systems of martial arts will provide some degree of ability in self defense but only if they address the real conditions of a street situation and this pertains to whatever system you undertake when learning martial arts.

For a greater in-depth look at these gap bridging strategies check out my very comprehensive resource "Mastering the Danger Zone" DVD series which is packed full of concepts and techniques for set ups and "Bridging the Gap" in Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts fighting and the street self defense situation that will put you way ahead of the game when learning mixed martial arts and Muay Thai.

Grab your free video and audio clips here at .

In addition I often discuss these strategies together with other fight game and self defense tactics in my blog at that will help you develop your knowledge and experience when learning martial arts and Muay Thai or self defense.

Animals have been used in martial arts for hundreds of years. Martial artists of old tried to emulate fantastic animals and mimic their bravery and strength with certain techniques of their own. Also named the Kung Fu fist forms, they are believed to be some of the most effective and deadly martial arts to study, unlike the many other martial arts styles of today. So let's have a look at what they are.

Dragon Claw

The dragon is a beast that has been famous in china for centuries. The Chinese actually believe that this style comes directly from the ancient dragon of myth. It is performed with an open hand technique which is in turn used to control your opponent by grabbing them then throwing them with the open hand technique a student could also use their fingers to stab out. The dragon claw method is a very fast technique which is hard to counteract, you will never see it coming either.

Tiger Claw

The tiger claw also uses an open hand movement like the dragon claw, but it is utilised for tearing and grabbing much the same as a real tiger's claw. It is the most famous of the animal arts and well known and practiced in the style of Kung fu as well. It is practiced by grabbing and gripping with your hand. You then embed your fingernails into your opponents skin, once executed you shred the skin off the bone, destroying your opponent. Sound a bit heavy? Well that's because it is, certainly not for the faint heated, this well renowned in martial arts as one of the deadliest attacks.

Leopard Claw

With this method you use a fist half opened. You strike with the ridge of your hand by moving your fingers into the palm of your hand. This way the palm can be sued for the main strike or a separate strike, this is a very fast technique and if done with the correct power and flow it is potentially lethal.

Crane Beak

With this technique you need to press your fingers together tightly forming a striking surface at the base of your fingertips. With enough years of practice your fingers can be conditioned in such as way that they extremely strong. When this technique is used with full force it is designed to attack vital parts of the body with lightening fast speed. If you have seen Kill Bill then you will know what I mean.

The Snake Head

The snake head is designed to mimic the onslaught of a snake in combat. You use an open hand, whilst holding the fingers tightly together, fully extended out. The tips of your fingers will then form a hard surface which is used to attack areas of the opponents' body such as pressure points and the groin. For its full effect to be used you need to use both hands.

The Kung Fu fist forms are not to be taken lightly; they are only taught to experienced students due to the danger involved. They are highly effective and dangerous which can result in serious injury, if you think this may be a bit of an extreme art then it may be prudent to check out other martial arts styles.

Conor McGregor Conor McGregor leaves meeting with Dana White all smiles | FOX Sports MMA LIFE SHOP

Introduction

I am Master Jason T. McConnell, a certified Black Belt Master Instructor under the American Song Moo Kwan Association and World Song Moo Kwan Association. I'm also certified under my instructor as a Black Belt in Hapkido. This probably means very little to the average person, so let me elaborate: For almost 20 years now I have trained in two martial art disciplines that compliment each other: Taekwondo and Hapkido. Taekwondo is comprised mostly of kicking but also utilizes blocking, stances, and striking techniques. Hapkido is more fluid and uses joint manipulations and judo throws as a big part of its arsenal. I have mastered the arts to a point of integration where hard style of Taekwondo and softer style of Hapkido can be used together to be more effectively.

I've spent the better part of my training learning realistic self-defense tactics, and I have participated in several women's self-defense classes. My approach follows a real-world philosophy that, on average, men are bigger and stronger than their female counterparts. Therefore, overpowering your opponent will most likely only happen with surprise and guile. I teach my students to exist beyond brute force, and I firmly believe that the most effective weapon we own is our own mind.

Part of my curriculum is teaching "Preventative Maintenance" or prevention techniques. My instructor use to tell us "The best fight I ever had, was the one I never had", and this is the absolute truth! Fortunately, the experience of a physical conflict can be avoided, and this article will provide you with some simple ideas to prevent yourself from being put in harms way.

Start With Yourself

I can't stress enough how important it is to exhibit confidence. Most predators are cowardly men who need that power trip, and simply walking with confidence will exclude you as a possible victim. If you look like a victim, you could become one; however, if you look confident you are telling the possible assailant that you will not go quietly.

How do you walk with confidence? Simple, fake it till you make it! Stand tall, shoulders back, head held high, and think like a strong woman. You are an important person and you deserve to be safe and secure in every moment of your life. You deserve to be loved and treated with respect just like others. Hold these thoughts when you're walking into a questionable environment.

Avoid Questionable Environments

I think the most brilliant (yet simple) concept ever told to me by a Grand Master was "The best way to get out of a hold, is never to get in it to begin with". The best way to get out of a scary or questionable situation is to never get in it to begin with (it works in other areas too).

Sometimes, however, we don't even know we're getting into a situation where we could get hurt. Who really thinks they're going to get kidnapped, rapped, or worse in the parking lot of a grocery store. How many women go out for a late night jog expecting to be harassed or assaulted? These are situations we would gladly avoid if only we knew they were a possibility... well, they are!

I use to believe, like so many, that intuition was some sort of metaphysical intervention by a higher power. I now understand that intuition is very simply your subconscious mind observing something that your conscious mind has neglected to see. Whatever you believe, LISTEN to your intuition and listen carefully; that voice will be your best friend in preventing a bad situation. Aside from that, here are a few suggestions to help keep you safe:

Avoid dark and unknown areas such as an ally way, a strange neighborhood, etc.

Be aware of other people or vehicles around your own when you're out in a public parking lot.

Request an escort to your vehicle if you feel uneasy.

Avoid going for a walk or jog with headphones on. I know it's disappointing not to have your music, but if you are listening to music then you are not aware of your surroundings. If you want music, use a treadmill in the safety of your own home or as an alternative, take one earphone out.

Drive yourself when you meet with friends, a neighbor, or even a date.

If in an accident, call the police FIRST before you do anything else, and keep them on the phone as long as possible.

Dating Tips

If you are going on a date, please take the time to set up a date buddy. This should be a close friend or relative who can help monitor your progress, someone who will call you at regular intervals just to make sure you are safe (and possibly having a good time). Your date buddy should call once very 30 minutes to an hour, and you need to have an agreement that should you not answer or call back in 5 to 10 minutes... he/she will call the police and report your last known position.

Make sure you drive yourself, any reasonable man will accept your caution and be willing to meet you somewhere, and I don't suggest letting him ride with you. Never have your date pick you up or meet you at your home; instead, meet at a neutral place or where the date is going to occur.

When selecting a location for the first date, be sure to choose a well lit and popular location. First dates are meant to be casual, fun, and intended to just get to know someone. This doesn't require a candle lit dinner in a private area; save those romantic ideals for later dates after the trust and relationship is established.

Conclusion

Please understand I am not trying to portray women as victims or weak, nor do I suggest every woman should live in fear of being raped, murdered, or otherwise harmed. What I am suggesting is that you live in awareness and with caution, and I wouldn't recommend anything that will cut into your quality of life. I am merely suggesting that you take some precautions, just as if you were fastening your seat belt to go for a drive in your car. You don't intend to get in an accident, but should one occur, you have the proper safety restraints in place. Protect yourself! You are a precious and wonderful person, and you deserve to be safe.

Although they are a little similar, martial arts moves are actually not the same as those used for self-defence. Many martial art moves involve the use of complicated and often impressive looking stunts that need lots of practice to be perfected. However, you cannot always use these moves in dangerous situations like when a drunk tries to confront you.

Even professional martial artists do not promote the use of the complicated moves that are seen in the movies. They do not help in defending yourself - they might even do more harm than good. By the time that you have landed a supposed attack on the opponent, he has already steered away from it and started a counter-attack.

When faced with dangerous situations, it is best that you use a move that would work on that given situation. In order to do self-defence right, you might consider getting lessons from experts so that you know how to face situations calmly and then think of a right move to land on the bad guys. Simple self-defence moves are often more recommended than the acrobatic stunts and they may even help in delivering more force to that other person. When you get to incapacitate them, even just for a few seconds or minutes, you give yourself a chance to run away or call the authorities and request for backup.

You do not have to be a martial artist to be able to defend yourself. Learning basic self-defence moves can surely help you stay away from trouble and keep yourself from getting in harm's way.

MMA How to Bully Proof Your Child MMA LIFE SHOP

There is something that has been going in schoolyards as long as kids have been going to school, and it is a tradition that needs to be stopped. At one time, bullying was not thought of as anything serious, just kids being kids. In many instances, bullying has been encouraged by parents and other authority figures throughout the years.

Today, we are learning just how much damage bullying can do to a kid's psyche, and how that damage can carry on well into their adult years. Even with all that is being done these days to prevent bullying, it still happens, which is why kids who are being bullied need to learn self defense, and not end up becoming bullies themselves, picking on others as they have been picked on.

Build Their Self-Esteem

One way to bully proof your child is to enroll them in martial arts classes. Not only are you going to be giving them a way to protect themselves, you will also be helping to build their self-esteem. Take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for example. This is a type of martial art that pretty much anyone can learn, no matter how large or small they are. Rather than kicking and punching, this type of martial art involves a variety of holds that are used to subdue an opponent. Even smaller children can easily learn how to take down opponents with the techniques they learn. This is going to give them the confidence to be able to stand up to bullies. Often, this is really all it takes, and with any luck, your child will never actually have to use the techniques learned, because bullies will often back down if they realize that those they are trying to bully aren't afraid of them. If the bully does not back down, your child will have the skills needed to be able to keep from getting hurt.

Keep them In Great Physical Shape

Another bonus to having your child take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training is that it is going to help him or her stay in great shape. Obesity is becoming a huge problem in children and teenagers these days, mainly due to the fact that with so many computers, video games and other gadgets, they do not actually go outside to be active, and spend hours at a time sitting in front of a screen.

All kids should be getting at least an hour of physical activity every day, and martial arts is a good way to get it. They can take one or two classes a week, and on the off days, they can practice what they have learned. This will ensure that they are getting plenty of exercise, which is going to help them to be healthy and happy.

MMA Dana White Praises Conor McGregor Ahead of UFC 196 Fight with Nate Diaz | Bleacher Report MMA LIFE SHOP

Aikido Power, as anyone who has witnessed it can testify, is an amazing thing. You will see it in ki power demonstrations, or in any of the basic aikido throws. What amazes people is that the seeming complexity and majesty is all based on one, very simple, physics concept.

To better understand this aikido principle, one needs to read the sayings of Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba. "If your (opponent) tries to pull you, let him pull. Don't go against (pull against him); pull in unison with him." An inspection of this simple aikido saying will show the truth of this incredible Martial Art.

The universe, all of it, is made up of objects that move around. And, wherever there is motion, one look for the source of that motion. The source of all motion is the human being who instigated it.

The aikidoka stands still in the center of the universe, in the center of himself. An object (a body) moves in his direction. This is a particle of the universe, and he must not destroy it, but rather help it.

To stand and encounter the collision is to create impact, is to create destruction. To give way, to help the universe move, that is creative. Do you think God is more creative or destructive?

In a perfectly balanced universe, he is both. In the world of humans there is inflow balanced by outflow. Thus, the creativity of Nage, placed in conjunction with the destructiveness of Uke, creates a perfectly balanced universe.

Thus, to do perfect Aikido, to achieve true Aikido Power, one need merely put aside his own willfullness and be willing to enter into a perfect balance with incoming force. In this way the Aikidoka will eventually be lead to discover the intent and geometry of the idea, of the person behind the attack. You must not push away, but be willing to accept, pull in accord with, accept the universe as it is, and then you will find the true martial art not just in physics, but in your spiritual nature. And this is the real idea behind O Sensei's advice.

Remember this in your Aikido practice: seek the truth of and live in O Sensei's simple, but profound advices. Do not contest with the universe, help simple equation and a heart open to its artifices. Do this and you will travel to the heart and soul of Aikido; do this, utilize the one simple physics of learning to agree with your opponent, to help him in his pushes and pulls, and you will find the truth of Aikido Power is a simple truth.

Conor McGregor Conor McGregor on José Aldo: 'I've beaten him already' MMA LIFE SHOP

If I had a penny for every time I heard somebody say "Well I'm training in so-and-so, which is better than your style", I would be a rich man. In this article I want to take a look at the question of whether or not there is a supreme fighting style - a martial art that will vanquish all in its path.

With the popularity of the UFC and a seemingly exponential increase in those now training in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), there is a growing trend for people to 'cross-train' - taking different aspects from traditional styles and amalgamating them into one seemingly comprehensive training regime.

I think that this is a strong indication towards the fact that no single style is better in every way than all of the others. For example: if you want to throw well, you may look to Judo. If you want to kick well, you take up Tae Kwon Do. If you want to punch well, boxing is the best place for you. Tae Kwon Do fighters are generally rather poor at throwing, in the same way that Judo practitioners lack dynamic kicking ability. Each art has a particular area of specialty and excels therein - to the detriment of other techniques.

Perhaps one of the most important factors in this debate is that of the individual fighter's ability. A quick search on YouTube will reveal a vast array of match-ups between various styles, with constantly varying outcomes as to the victor. More often than not, the deciding elements are one fighter's higher level of fitness, faster reflexes and greater strength, rather than purely having a 'better' art. In my own experience, I have been privileged to train with and compete against a wide variety of styles and fighters, and I have an enormous amount of respect for the individuals I have crossed swords with.

Often, 'softer' arts such as Aikido and many of the Chinese internal arts are brushed aside in favour of hard hitting styles such as Muay Thai and western kickboxing. While 'hard' arts do have an obvious appeal, the quietly destructive utilisation of an opponent's power as found in the 'soft' arts is not to be underestimated!

In conclusion, I would tend to believe that no one style has widespread dominance. So in many ways, it is foolish to try and amplify your masculinity by bragging that your style is better than another, it all depends on what skill sets you want to attain.

This however, leads to a few fairly pertinent questions - is an MMA fighter better than one from a traditional style background? What about UFC? Is it really the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or a bunch of technique-less meatheads? This is a big subject, and something I intend to cover in a later article!

MMA 3 Reasons to Learn Martial Arts Now MMA LIFE SHOP

When it comes to learning martial arts, people assume it's an easy thing. The average consumer drives by a variety of teaching options on their way to work and never thinks twice about it. However, there comes a time in everyone's life when they are tested as to whether or not they know what to do to defend themselves from untimely doom. Most recently, national media covered a story of a young woman that was on a bike ride, and on her way was attacked by a couple of thugs. She could've been another statistic or victim, but instead she fought back with her knowledge of Wing Chun and knocked the guys out, held them until authorities came, and saved her own life. The incident is far from random, as we live in a world full of violence, and it's only a matter of time before you will have to face odds that are greater than you would like to admit. Before you panic, consider that there is something you can do, and the following 3 reasons to learn martial arts now will assist you in understanding that principal.

First and foremost, by learning any form of training method, you will inherently be moving your body in ways that you probably aren't used to at first. The first day of your learning will be full of new experiences, and will set you up for healthy living. Many people also know this as exercise, and that is one way to sustain proper weight and manage living for a long time. Most plans of learning how to defend yourself also tie into healthy living, and while they are not a "forceful" diet of any type, it goes hand in hand with the many tenants of martial arts and beyond.

The second reason you will want to learn, aside from weight loss, is for self-defense. As stated in the first paragraph, you will come into a time where you will need to defend either yourself or your family, and you need to be prepared. You do not need to have a weapon, or know how to elaborately plan a full-scale attack, but you should know how to disarm an assailant, and physically harm them enough to let the proper authorities come in and assist you. Remember, your goal is not to learn deadly arts, but rather enough to make sure that you are alive and not seriously injured.

The third reason you should start learning martial arts is because it can help alleviate a lot of ailments. For instance, if you're bored and depressed, you will snap out of it after a few lessons and you will regain a self-confidence that might otherwise be lost. You can also rest assured that by maintaining a good workout regimen in light of training, you will be healthy and therefore less prone to certain diseases. Do not confuse or exchange this with other healthy living options, but rather, see it as a reason to get out of a funk and get over some illnesses that only exercise can help.

The above 3 reasons should get you motivated to the point of at least looking for a way to learn. You can learn via videos, books, magazines, or even a dojo if you live near one.

From the history to its definition and its styles, there is absolutely more to learn about Kung Fu than could possibly be discussed here now. It has become popular among movies especially the ones that has Jet Li, Jackie Chan or the Legendary Bruce Lee in the lead role.

Definition

Kung Fu means Chinese Martial Arts as borrowed in the English terminology. However, its literal meaning is "wushu". "Wu" means martial and "shu" means skill or method, thus the term martial arts. This discipline is practiced for physical and spiritual growth and is also used as a method of self defense.

History

It is believed to have been practiced in China dating 4,000 some years ago. Known to be the earliest form of martial arts, it was created as a form of self defense during combat as conflicts were common between colonies. The man responsible for the introduction of this is an Indian monk known as Bodhidarma. In the Shaolin Monastery, he noticed that the monks usually fall asleep during meditation. Thus, he secluded himself from them and looked for a solution. After nine years of isolation, he was able to create this method which helped the monks develop a stronger mind and body.

As months progressed, it was developed and has been named as Chan. It was during the Tang Dynasty wherein the monks were officially trained to become martial artists so as to protect the wealth and property of the Shaolin Temple.

The training in the monastery then absorbed martial arts skills outside the temple. Then they were able to incorporate them into their training. After a few more studies and developments, they were also able to come up with the five animal styles of martial arts namely: dragon, tiger, leopard, snake, and crane.

The Five Animal Styles

Each animal style has a specific purpose for development.

Dragon - the exercises done for this style is to enrich the spirit and produce flowing movements.

Tiger - it is done primarily to establish stronger bones in the body.

Leopard - just like the animal itself, it is practiced to enhance speed, strength and power.

Snake - it is used to practice correct breathing patterns to be able to develop the inner power and strike the weak spots of the enemy.

Crane -it is exercised to cultivate balance and footwork.

Using these all five of these styles together creates the Chinese martial arts form known as Shaolin Kung Fu which is still practiced in Shaolin monasteries up to this day.

In the modern era, Kung Fu training has been regenerated because of various combinations of techniques which were combined and passed on from one generation to another. However, it has not entirely changed because the traditional ways are still observed up to this day.

Kung Fu elicits numerous learning for a martial artist, as what the Shaolin monks have learned way back. Learning its ways will help you understand how they preserved and took care of its original ways even though it existed thousands of years ago. Moreover, it helps a person develop not only skills in self defense, but also a healthy mind and body.

THE REAR NAKED CHOKE IN MARTIAL ARTS

Martial arts have developed greatly over the last ten years. And you have different methods of combat. There are also a wide range of applicable techniques that submits an opponent. There are techniques that apply to any form of martial art, be it the MMA or the Submission grappling. Some of these include, among others the rear naked choke, the ankle hold and the kimura lock. Knowing many of these techniques and how to apply them would make for an effective fight. I would like to discuss the rear naked choke technique in this article.

The term derives from the jujutsu martial art. It has also been used as a technique in the judo. In the judo martial art, it is known as the "Hadaka Jime". This method involves the choking applied to the neck from behind. It is also called naked strangle. This technique doesn't require any form of tool or uniform. The one using the technique winds his arm around the opponent's neck then holding firmly on his or her biceps. It can also be applied with bare hands. Here, the attacker would have his hands around the opponent's neck. This later could be considered blood choke. It will abrupt the movement of blood towards the brain through the carotid arteries. This technique can cause unconsciousness in the victim for some few second who allows the attacker to take advantage or to score more points.

Note that the neck is a sensitive part of the body. The rear naked choke can also cause whiplash or other neck injuries if the attacked attempts a stupid escape. This method is very effective for submission. It is important to use it with a lot of discipline, especially in training sessions as it could cause suffering to a partner. In the case that a partner in training doesn't surrender but attempts to flee, it could be advisable to let go. This method could be applied using any position. However, it is important to learn and practice the defences against it to be able to get off the hold.

Just like any technique, it is important to determine first if you are in the advantageous position before applying. There are definitely many reverse techniques or counter attacks against every hold. Knowing how to defend you against them is important. In training sessions for any Martial Arts, is it BBJ, Judo or submission grappling, it is important to know various techniques and how they work. This will enables you to be able to escape them on time. Being able to read your opponent's reflexes before time could be very helpful in steering off any hold. This comes from long training and awareness while being engaged in a fight.

Using the rear naked choke could automatically cause your opponent to surrender. It is important to determine when to use you. Making sure that you will have all the advantage before using this technique is definitely necessary. This will also help you get out of any surprises.

Tae Kwon Do has become a familiar name in the recent times. It is a traditional martial art form from Korea which requires a lot of footwork as well powerful and fast kicks from the practitioner. The usage of hand for punches and blocks is also there in Tae Kwon Do but the practitioner needs to be more efficient in his/her footwork as this is more about footwork than handiwork. The practitioner needs to learn a lot of fast footwork and also needs to kicks and combinations in order to excel in this field. However, it is not a day's job to learn taekwondo. This particular form of martial arts entails the fulfillment of a particular set of skills and values which requires time, effort and practice to master.

The word Tae Kwon Do consists of three words which are derived from Korean terms which are Tae, Kwon, and Do. Tae: to crush or kick with the foot or jump

Kwon: to punch or demolish with the help of one's hand or with fist Do: the method, the way and the art

Though Tae Kwon Do is a martial art it is mainly used for defense purposes. The aim of learning tae kwon do is not only self defense but one can also learn a number of different things from this martial art. Tae kwon do is not just a form of martial art but it is also a kind of intellectual order which transcends the physical benefits and helps one to learn ways to conduct one's life.

Principles of Taekwondo:

There are three basic principles in taekwondo which every learner is taught at the beginning of their training. The practitioners of this martial art are expected to put into practice as well as inculcate all these three basic principles in their daily life which include:

???Focus: This involves an understanding of the basic things which are required to achieve success in Taekwondo as well as all other aspects of life. Focus mainly refers to the management of one's life. It also involves setting one's goals so that one can develop the focus and do everything in order to achieve those goals.

???Respect: The main thing in this principle is that one must have respect for oneself in order to achieve success in life. The code of reciprocity which entails one to behave in the same way as others behave with him/her is also an important part of this principle.

???Discipline: The importance of discipline in one's life cannot be avoided. In order to excel in any field in life one must have the required discipline whether it is in academics, sports or any other form of martial arts. This can also be interpreted as commitment to a particular activity to be fully successful in mastering that activity.

A concept would be rendered useless unless it has been given the opportunity to grow and take roots. A concept alone is but the beginning, how it is allowed to grow is the real story.

Thus, a spotless management is required for any concept to reach its full growth. Let's take Martial Arts Management as an example. Excelling in this field is one but teaching it to others is a different story. Being in control of your mind and body may seem easy compared to being in control of ten to fifteen students all at once. True, a teacher's personality is important but there are still several factors at hand. All these factors must be firmly held together to lead to a worthy marketing strategy.

What serves as the backbone of any form of management is business intelligence. Knowing the tricks of the trade first hand is a treasure that no Jack Sparrow can steal. With business intelligence, a strategic plan can easily be conceived. This is where the Martial Arts School Marketing would prove to be useful. If you know what you're doing, then what could come as harm in continuing?

One of the key elements in Martial Arts School Marketing is the quality of the mat. Does this mat feel comfortable to the student who wishes to learn the secrets of martial arts? Is it spotless so as not to be a distraction? The mat may seem to be unimportant, but the thing is, it is. In any dojo, the mat is the one thing that is in contact with the learners of the discipline. It is one of the key factors that attracts a student and keeps the martial arts business running. It may appear to be nothing to the human eye but in the mind's eye, it is everything.

The concept of the mat is only a small step into fully embracing the management of Martial Arts. My advice is, start with the little things for these are what are most likely be overlooked.

From marketing, the idea of gaining profits was born. It is highly unlikely for a businessman to overlook the importance of gaining from any investment. Dollars are spent on producing flyers and advertisements... this is the concept of Karate Marketing. A businessman would start looking for ways to entice students. One of the main downfalls of this technique is how the message is conveyed. The flyers may be too cluttered, advertisements too indirect.

Karate Marketing must be done in an orderly manner so as to relay the correct impression to the target market. If a Martial Arts School finds it their edge that they have excellent mats to ensure the best concentration, then the flyers and advertisements should say so in plain text; never in jargons.

With the foundations of Martial Arts School Management and Marketing in place as well as the Karate Marketing, any concept would definitely took roots and reach its full growth.

MMA How Does Jeet Kune Do Compare to Mixed Martial Arts? MMA LIFE SHOP

If you've ever watched a MMA fight or UFC match, you'll see that the fighters use multiple techniques and moves to try and bring their opponent down. Televised fights like these have spurred an incredible interest in all types of mixed martial arts (MMA). Many people interested in learning mixed martial arts inevitably find themselves looking up information on the different styles and choosing to learn more about those that strike their interest. Many mixed martial arts styles, such as Jeet Kune Do, draw on techniques from a wide variety of fighting styles - while cutting out much of the superfluous techniques and inefficient moves that slow down a fighter or cause them to be less potent or direct in using the tools at their disposal.

Benefits of Learning Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do itself can't really be compared to mixed martial arts fighting because the two complement and are part of each other. You won't hear a student of JKD say that Muay Thai is better than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or that grappling is a better method of taking down an opponent than fencing. That's because Jeet Kune Do pulls from several different disciplines (most notably boxing, fencing and Wing Chun) to give the fighter exactly what he or she needs to be able to fight - nothing more and nothing less. In addition, JKD has no predetermined patterns or fighting techniques, but rather allows the student the flexibility to take what suits them and leave the rest behind. It is this accepting philosophy and methodology that have made Jeet Kune Do so popular.

MMA and JKD Draw from Similar Backgrounds

At their core, MMA and JKD expect similar results from their followers. Students should know how to adequately defend themselves and attack within several ranges of combat - with or without weapons. Unlike in some other fighting styles, where defending oneself is done by means of moving away from the attacker, JKD emphasizes moving toward them - in a sense, intercepting their attack. This kind of stop-hit is also evinced in the name Jeet Kune Do itself - meaning "The Way of the Intercepting Fist".

Bruce Lee often commented on the "flowery" movements of traditional martial arts or, as he sometimes called it "the classical mess". He insisted that the only real way for a student to understand what methods work best for him or her was by actually engaging in direct combat. This helped hone the student's fighting readiness without wasting time or effort. This kind of "take what you need and leave the rest behind" philosophy might not look as good on the dojo floor - but it will most certainly come in handy when you need to fend off a gang of thugs or protect yourself or your family from an attacker!

Also called a mule, donkey or horse kick, the back kick can be one of the most powerful kicks in the martial arts. This is mainly due to the fact that it uses some of the strongest and largest muscles in the human body. Many martial artists would argue that the back kick is the most powerful kick in the martial arts - especially when delivered as a spinning back kick.

In street combat, the back kick is a realistic option as you are kicking (most of the time) below the face and most often - below the waist.

The back kick is also similar to the Side Kick, but differs mainly because your target is behind you.

Since it is a challenge to strike behind you with your arms and the fact that your legs are longer, you can use a back kick to keep an opponent at a safe distance. The kick can also be used as a last second attack to surprise an opponent when they are within range of your kick.

Since the back kick is relatively easy to learn, it becomes one of the basic kicks (along with the low sweep kick) to teach beginners and those first learning the martial arts. Students will need to practice timing and eye-foot coordination as with other attacks of the leg and arm.

For the most part - you are kicking the same way a horse or mule would kick. We break it down with a coil, extension and recoil (often omitted in the back kick) but the general motion is simply to thrust your leg back and kick out with the heel.

Striking surface

Heel of foot

Striking areas

Knee, ribs, plexus, groin

- First bring your leg up into coil position (optional with the back kick)

- Now turn your head to look behind you (or use peripheral vision)

- Thrust the leg back (toes pointed down) and target with the heel

- Return the leg to starting position on the ground or into a recoil position

Applications:

- Keeping an opponent at a safe distance or pushing targets away

- Great for kicking knees and boney areas like the ribs

- A great way to Jam an Attack

- Good kick when facing away from an opponent or multiple opponents

- Make use of the powerful muscles in your leg

Be sure that your leg an attack come in at a direct attack (linear) and not from the side like a round kick (circular). You want to focus on using the back of the leg muscles to get as much power as possible.

Taekwondo also known as TaeKwonDo, is a Korean martial arts style that has been around for over 2000 years. TaeKwonDo incorporates the use of blocks, punches, sweeps and kicks. The word Taekwondo comes from a combination of three different Korean words:

Tae, means to kick with your feet

Kwon, means to punch or strike with your fist

Do, means a way or method.

You put it all together and it basically means "The way of the hands and feet". Pretty cool right? TaeKwonDo has six levels or six colors of belts that you can accomplish. You have white, yellow, green, blue, red and black. Each belt represents the progress a student has made. For example, the white belt means that there is an absence of knowledge. It shows that you are a beginner and trying to learn. As you get better you will move on to the yellow belt which means you are learning and starting to take hold of the art.

Next level is the green belt, this shows that you are getting more advanced. Next we have the blue belt. The blue belt represents the sky and it shows that you are moving up and reaching higher goals. Next, you move on to the red belt. The red belt means you know your stuff. Its a color of danger. It shows others the level of skill and knowledge you have acquired.

And the final level is the black belt. You must be at least 16 years old in order to receive your black belt. If you are not, you will receive what is known as a poon. A poon is a belt that is half red and half black. Once you turn 16, you will receive your official black belt.

Suppose someone starts to ski for the first time in his life. What he will do first depends on his personality. There are people who buy new clothes and equipment copying world-famous skiers. There are people who laugh at them. These are people who buy books, CD's and DVD's to learn. These people think copying just clothes and equipment of top skiers is meaningless. They think copying outside without learning and mastering internal skills and souls does not make sense.

It is true that one, wearing expensive ski clothes and equipment, looks funny if they are poor skiers. Is it so funny starting something new with copying someone who is a master, already? Copying only outside appearance may be strange. What if they try to copy the skills and souls of professional players? Copying outward appearance is just the first step for them. Do you still want to laugh at them?

Thinking about the learning process, copying plays a crucial role in learning. First a child needs to watch and listen his parents to know how they speak and act. Then, 90% of all 12 - 16 years of school education is for students to copy their teachers and seniors.

If one is new to PC, he needs to learn how he can use PC. He may need to buy a new computer desk to pub his new PC and Display. Is it unnecessary investment? It is not if he can comfortably use his new PC and spend his time using it on his new PC desk.

Learning a foreign language is all about copying. The people, who learn new expressions by their heart and go out to use them, will be those who master a new language quicker than others. Those are the ones cannot stop themselves to use new expressions they learn.

It is the same thing to learn a new sport or a Martial Art. Take a look at the form of a Martial Art. The beginner training is repeating their masters and seniors. Martial Arts' forms were so designed that students can copy basic skills easily.

Copying plays a vital part of learning. Let us stop laughing at the people who copies outward appearance of masters. It can be essential first step for a beginner to learn and master a new skill. In Martial Arts, forms are not fighting. They are not even fighting training. One who intends to master Martial Arts cannot make light of the importance of forms. If one copies and masters essence of forms, it will help him to master fighting techniques. Martial Arts beginner can buy a new outfit and copy their masters and elders in appearance first. The beginner can and will copy skills, techniques, spirits, and souls, later.

So you want to become a ninja?

Excellent choice.

The benefits of learning to become a ninja are endless. It's much more than learning a martial arts style. It's a lifestyle. And it's damn cool.

There are 3 ways you can learn how to become a ninja (with emphasis on modern day ninja lifestyle training).

1. Ninja Camps. Believe it or not there are ninja camps in existence. There locations are not disclosed and you usually need to be accepted to attend, but information on their specifics can be found on the internet. These are excellent choices for learning both ninja training and modern day ninja lifestyle. The hands on immersion approach is hard to beat. Some camps have very flexible schedules and time frames in which you can attend. For instance there's everything from weekend courses to 3 month long courses. Either way you will live at the camp for the duration of training.

2. Ninjitsu classes. These can be taken in a group/class atmosphere or one on one private training. These are not always the easiest to find, but be sure to check out local dojo's, as sometimes outside instructors will be brought in to teach speciality disciplines. You can also post on a bulletin board requesting to learn privately. The only downfall with classes is the focus is often heavy on tradition and the more modern day ninja lifestyle aspects are not as heavily focused on.

3. Ninja At-Home Study. This is definitely an option and an excellent one to start out with. Today with the internet we have the luxury of learning and training skills on our own. Since ninja training can be hard to find and camps or classes may be too expensive or inconvenient, learning from an online e-book or online classes can be a very effective way to pursue your training. The big advantage with online books and courses is that there is emphasis on the modern day ninja lifestyle. That is, they teach how you can become a legitimate modern day ninja, and you can learn this right from your own home.
