MMA A Dynamic Kung Fu Wooden Dummy The Easy Way MMA LIFE SHOP

The kung fu wooden dummy is a fantastic training device. It toughens the arms for blocking, it toughens the palms for striking, and it is an opponent that never quits, but always loses. Unfortunately, it costs a bit much, so here are a couple of alternatives to help the wooden dummy aficionado.

The Kung Fu Wooden Dummy is popular in many martial arts, but the main art is Wing Chun Ving Tsun) Gung Fu. This art has practiced with the wooden man for the longest, and even has a complete form for dominating it. Other arts, however, use the dummy, also.

This writer recalls seeing the Kung Fu wooden dummy in Jackie Chan's wonderful kung fu flick Rumble in the Bronx. Seeing the air fill with dust when Jackie lays into it is a great moment. Possibly the best flick to demonstrate the wooden figure is Ip Man, with Donny Yen.

In the beginning the martial artist will become competent at training on kicking bags and speed bags, and perhaps strengthening the mitts on the makiwara. It won't be long, however, until the karateka or kung fu zealot puts a couple of rug samples on a pine tree and starts tougher hand conditioning exercises. A nice trick, however, is to get the wooden limb to move towards you so you can block it.

This writer made a quick striking pole by taping a towel around a broomstick, and then having people come at him with it. This rapidly turned into an advanced form of free fighting, where the block had to be accomplished, and the distance to the attacker covered. It is a hard task to move three or four feet in a split second to close the distance the to the pole.

From there one might consider mounting a pole on some sort of swivel device. Bury a four by four in the ground, then place a moveable pole atop it. On can block the arm, and block it again when it swings around, and even get into ducking and blocking against the thing.

Eventually, one will want to get a large piece of wood-a log-drill holes through it, and set up some arms and even legs. One can then dance back and forth, palm the wooden limbs, and pretend that one is fighting a real opponent. What is really nifty is to put some large springs on the limbs so that there is a certain amount of give and take.

The cost of wood being considerable, or perhaps the difficulty of procuring a log when you live in in a city, one might think about different materials. A length of PVC might suffice, if one can find thick enough material that won't break, or perhaps even some sort of light metal. This type of dummy and limbs would require some sort of wrapping to protect the hands and feet.

In closing, there are many ways to set up a fake opponent, and the martial artist is limited only by his imagination. Watch movies, read books, and start inspecting the materials available to you. Guaranteed, a kung fu wooden dummy will go a long way in your martial arts training.

Sometimes, street fight situations take place as some big shot seems to have flied off the handle. Well, you can be 100% positive that in such circumstances, he or she actually feels like strangling you with bare hands or seeing your head taken off by the same hands. Such individuals will, therefore, act to this purpose and this purpose alone ? that is why you will most often see them move their punches to and fro, in expectance of hitting your head off your shoulders. Indeed, punches remain some of the most popular street fighting moves.

However, the mere swinging of arms will not make such street fighting moves efficient. Fundamental laws of physics say that the substance of the strength crops up at the top of the semicircle, which is about intermediate to the mark (the individual attacked) in this situation. On the other hand, in street fight situation, you can put money on another punch-swinger to make his appearance sooner or later.

Have you ever heard someone say ?let?s throw?? Have you ever considered the fact that he or she was actually speaking for a situation as such ? where punches are thrown at large, with no respect whatsoever for the most essential rules of correct street combat? Well, the reason why such punches are preferred is that they remain street fighting moves that are the most natural to approach.

With such street fighting moves, fighters actually try to obtain as much strength as possible. Frequently, street combat begins with fighters pushing one another to then ?evolve? to large swings of punches. You will some big shot pushing someone else. This one will most likely push back. The big shot will push back again. You may hear a word or two said against each other. It concludes with a punch in the face or in the stomach /sternum area ? in the case where things have not cooled down in the verbal stage.

Indeed, most of the attacks, after the shouting and the shoving stages, involve swings. Generally, such street fight moves are inadequately aimed. In consequence, they will fail to reach their target or they strike a false target (like the brow). Alternatively, it may even happen for the attacker to fracture his or her fingers or wrist ? as he or she may not have had adequate preparation for such street combat.

If some big shot flings a fisticuff at you, you only bend your head ? his hand will smash into your cranium. Alternatively, you can lift your lead foot and place a frontal spontaneous boot into his spare tire (yeah, potbellies are quite a hilarious show with such ?pugilists?) and if he has a beer or two (or more, for that matter) deposited in his body, you are the definite winner of this street fight episode.

MMA How Martial Arts Sparring Shoes Saved My Marriage MMA LIFE SHOP

If you do any kind of martial arts sparring, you know that protective gear is of the utmost importance. Any man who has the stones to go into a sparring match without a cup on, won?t have them for very long. There?s protective gear like the heavily padded ?foot gloves? that I wear when I?m teaching, so I don?t accidentally do a spin kick and take someone?s head off when they miss a block. But the protective gear I want to sing the praises of today are the martial arts sparring shoes.

Now, I use the martial arts shoe for two very simple reasons. The first is that after I did a series of practice bits against a wooden ?sparring dummy?, I walked out of the dojo on several bone-deep bruises in my feet. Now, bruises are the price you pay for any contact sport, including martial arts. Even a little bit of padding would?ve kept me from walking funny for two days. My friends and co-workers were making fun of my little mincing steps to avoid putting weight on the tops of my feet from a particularly nasty bruise ? almost a break in the bone.

The foot has so many small bones. And almost no meat. No fat. No protection. Poor bloodflow. At least mine do. Pain sticks attached to my ankles!

I guess I?m a slow learner. Two weeks later, I did the same practice drill and about pulped my big toe when I mis-judged the distance to the wingchun wooden dummy on a kick ? instead of hitting it with the arch of the foot, I did a direct ?full force kick? with the point of contact centered on the toe. The joint popped, the toe swelled up to twice its size, and only pure blind luck kept me from having a fracture.

OK, so kicking wooden dummies in bare feet is a dumb idea....

I went looking for things to save me from my own stupidity and found martial arts sparring shoes. Now, those sparring shoes are different from tourney foot pads. They?re light enough that you won?t develop compensatory habits to adjust for the weight?and while they don?t offer as much protection, it?s the difference between kicking a wooden dummy with your bare foot and kicking it with a pair of tennis shoes on.

On top of that, they also improve traction on the ground, and stability when doing routines and drills. Given how much I like Kung Fu styles, and how acrobatic they are, that extra traction was very appealing. While it?s not fun to be thrown on your ass by a sparring partner, it?s even less fun to do it on your own because you slipped.

Plus, to be honest, it was good to come home from a session in the dojo without feeling like I was being a sniveling, whiney brat because my feet hurt. Trust me, these things saved my marriage ? my wife was making fun of my new ?dance steps? when I was busy beating the crap out of my feet and whining about it when I had to take out the garbage.

Didn't I mention I can dance? That's for another article. She saw Dancing With The Stars and it was over. I don't know what hurts more, learning to tango or kicking that wooden dummy!

MMA Conor McGregor Hints at Retirement in Post on Twitter | Bleacher Report MMA LIFE SHOP

Subtle, Yet Real On The Dance Floor

At a filming of the show America's Got Talent, I witnessed a mini dance competition for audience members, between taping and judging the show's real contestants. (I guess it's AGT's way to keep the audience both enthusiastic and entertained.)

During the dance competition, I saw a phenomenon that I have seen for years. A percentage of males (teens and young adults) incorporate martial arts techniques into their dance moves.

Have you seen this, too?

I even saw some young "karate move flashers" at my daughter's middle school dance.

Whether at a taping of America's Got Talent, or a kids' dance, the moves are messy. They are pure slop.

This started me thinking...

Martial Arts Can't Mimic Dance Exactly

You shouldn't make your dance moves mimic martial arts moves exactly. The crispness, stances, and so on would make you look ridiculous. In fact, a lot of what I see borders on the silly, as it is.

But what if... what could isolate a movement that's necessary but hard to learn smoothly, and practice this over and over?

Isolated and Concentrated Martial Arts Practice

What I am proposing is that you make your dancing look like dancing. (If you do martial arts moves, "because" you don't know any dance moves, then... learn some.) Subtly incorporate a motion that's needed for advanced martial arts application.

What did I have in mind?

Broken rhythm of darting in and out on different beats. Mix it up.

Circling while dancing, and smoothly changing direction. Just don't make it look too "boxer like."

Raising and lowering your arms on the beat, and then cleanly switching to the half beat, and back. This doesn't have to look like a punch... just play with the timing.

Doing a couple of speed motions with your feet, by having them close together. We all know this is the most efficient way to move quickly.

Dropping down. It doesn't have to be splits ouch at the thought of "me" doing that. In the Filipino martial arts, there is a quick drop down to one knee... except the knee doesn't make contact with the ground. Hmm.

Leading any motion with your elbow(s). Don't make it look like an elbow strike. Simply use the dance move as an excuse to get your elbow out there quickly.

More Creative Martial Dance Practice

Do I have any other ideas?

Sure, I could go on and on. But let me leave you with a potential gem....

What if you could have your arms or your feet describe the exact path that you'd need to punch, move, or kick in a real fight... but what if you hid the fact that it was a martial arts move?

You'd execute the "path" of the punch without your hand being clenched in a fist. It would be slow and smooth. You'r train your brain... acquire muscle memory for when you do practice at full speed, during martial arts class.

Take any of these ideas and practice them over and over, "karate kid style," and you might just have the ingredient necessary to help you master some aspect of your practical training.

And we didn't even talk about the aerobic benefits of dancing for the martial artist.

Just dance, dance, dance... all night long!

Conor McGregor Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2 Announced as UFC 200 Main Event | Bleacher Report MMA LIFE SHOP

This is an awful notion, that a gang member could learn martial arts by joining the army. The sad truth, however, is that gang recruitment is up, severely, and these gangs are actually using the military for training in martial arts, combat weapons, and all manner of skills. This could be utterly terrifying, if you think about it, a gang member being trained as a soldier and then turned loose on the streets of America.

That the number of gangsters joining the military is up is without a doubt. According to the FBI there has been a whopping 40% increase in gang membership since 2009. These are people raised in the gang culture, don't have jobs, and the military has become a viable option for earning a living.

To be truthful, many gang members join the military with the desire to get out of the gang life. Once in the military, however, they find a culture of gangsters in the armed services. These gangsters go about enlisting new gang members, and picking up any 'strays' that are attempting to leave the gang life.

The FBI further says that they have evidence that over fifty different gangs, representing all the major gangs, have presence in the armed forces. These gangsters come from 100 different areas of the country. This is a rather large segment of the population.

The FBI also claims that that only are gang members joining the military, but other undesirable types are finding a home there. Members of Outlaw Motorcycle gangs have been joining the army. There have even been instances of prison gangs signing up.

That this criminal element is becoming a serious threat to homeland harmony is obvious. These budding felon types can get military hardware, such as machine guns, and even explosive devices. All too often these criminal types join the army reserve, then go home on leave and share the training.

One thing these gangsters can do, once they have joined the military, is use military resources to enhance their criminal activity. Apparently gang members have been able to use military computers to search for potential areas to expand their criminal activities. Gang members have actually searched military database and communication systems to deal in drugs.

In conclusion, it is hard to know what to do about this. The military needs smart, young men, and a clever gang member sometimes fits the bill. At any rate, that gang members could learn martial arts, and take advantage of other facets of military training is something the government may have to soon address.
